MOSCOW, Feb 15 (SW) - Sevilla and Real Betis were both successful in their UEFA Cup round of sixteen first leg matches on Wednesday, while Espanyol suffered a 2-1 defeat by Schalke 04.

Lokomotiv Moscow - Sevilla 0-1

Sevilla travelled to the Russian capital to face Lokomotiv, and left with a valuable 0-1 advantage over their opponents. The only goal of the match was scored by Jordi in the 75th minute.

Schalke 04 - Espanyol 2-1

Espanyol were less successful at Schalke 04. In Gelsenkirchen, the Spaniards did take the lead with a goal from Luis Garcia in the 34th minute, but Marcelo Jose Bordon levelled in the 67th. Schalke scored a winning goal through Fabian Ernst in the 88th minute.

Real Betis - AZ Alkmaar 2-0

Last year's semi finalists AZ Alkmaar seem to be heading for an earlier departure this year, as Louis van Gaal's side crashed to a 2-0 defeat at Betis. The hosts needed until the 70th minute to open the score through Diego Tardelli, and Robert added a second nine minutes later.
