GENOA, Jul 6 (SW) - Former Italy striker Christian Vieri agreed to a one-year contract with Serie A side Sampdoria on Thursday after a short stint with French side AS Monaco.

Vieri, who will turn 33 next week, was not selected for Italy's World Cup squad after suffering an injury while at Monaco. He had joined the principality side from an unsuccessful stint at AC Milan at the start of the 2005/06 season.

The striker is famous for being a then world-record transfer (£32 million) in 1999 from Lazio to Inter Milan and he has also played for Prato, Torino, Pisa, Ravenna, Venezia, Atalanta, Juventus, and Atlético Madrid.

Vieri has also appeared at several major tournament for Italy and has scored nine World Cup goals in his career and has made 49 career appearances for the Azzurri.

Sampdoria are expected to unveil Vieri on Friday.
