MUNICH/MOSCOW, Oct 31 (SW) - Bayern Munich booked their spot in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 on Tuesday despite being held at home by Sporting. That was made possible because of Inter Milan's victory at Spartak Moscow.

Bayern Munich - Sporting 0-0
Bayern were wasteful with their opportunities and in particular Roy Makaay who dragged a shot wide of the far post when he could shot high to the near post, and that proved costly when Liedson dragged one just wide moments later.

Makaay in the second half fired a shot directly at goalkeeper Ricardo when he could have done better and then later fired high on the break

But the best chance for Sporting came in the 76th minute when a free kick from just outside the area by João Moutinho came back off the crossbar with Kahn helplessly rooted to the turf.

A late header by Martin Demichelis forced a great reaction save out of Ricardo to preserve the goalless draw and keep the Portuguese side alive in the group.

Since Inter and Sporting still must play each other, the draw sufficed to give the Germans a spot in the Round of 16 with two matches to spare.

Spartak Moscow - Inter Milan 0-1
A terrible giveaway in the first minute by Martin Stranzl allowed striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic to race into the area and cross for an unmarked Julio Cruz who had an easy tap-in for third goal of the competition.

Later on in the half, Cruz could have had a second goal after being nicely setup by Dejan Stankovic and Ibrahimovic missed another good chance early on in the second half as Inter failed to extend their lead.

Spartak then turned it on later in the half and began to control the possession substantially, and they should have equalized in the 78th minute when a long drive by Roman Shiskhin came crashing off the underside of the bar.
