BLACKPOOL, England (AFP) - Blackpool ended the interest of non-league sides in this season´s FA Cup with a 4-2 victory over spirited Aldershot in the third round at Bloomfield Road.
Aldershot went into the game as they only remaining non-league outfit left in the competition following Tamworth´s 4-1 home defeat to Norwich earlier in the day. Any hopes the Conference team had of causing a shock seemed dead and buried with just seven minutes as the 1953 FA Cup winners - during the era of the great Stanley Matthews and Stan Mortensen - went 2-0 up. Midfielder Scott Vernon gave the Seasiders the lead on four minutes reacting quickest to a flick-on to tuck home the opener. And just three minutes later striker Andy Morrell headed home Adrian Forbes´s cross from the right to double the League One team´s advantage. The match seemed over but Aldershot, a former league side, did not wilt and gave themselves a lifeline just before the half hour mark. On 27 minutes, midfielder Mark Molesley saw his initial shot blocked but striker Jon Grant pounced on the rebound to fire some life into the tie. Aldershot remained competitive until 17 minutes from time when Morrell bagged his second and effectively killed off the game with a shot that crashed in off the crossbar. When Ben Burgess slotted home from the spot with 10 minutes left, Aldershot were in danger of being routed but substitute Mark Pritchard gave the score some respectability with a goal two minutes from time. Blackpool are unlikely to repeat the heroics of the Matthews and Mortensen era, when they reached the final in 1948 and 1951 before coming back from 3-0 down in the 1953 final to beat Bolton 4-3, but they will be relieved to see their name in the hat for the fourth round draw. |
