LONDON (AFP) - Crisis-hit English Premiership club Spurs sacked manager Martin Jol on Thursday according to media reports.
Both Friday's Sun and The Times claim that the Dutchman was told he was surplus to requirements before Thursday's UEFA Cup match with Spanish side Getafe. Spurs fans voiced their displeasure at the rumours by chanting 'stand up for Martin Jol' during the match. According to The Times website Jol - who will become the second high profile manager of a London club to leave so far this season with Jose Mourinho leaving Chelsea - agreed severance terms with the club, who have suffered a dreadful start to the season despite spending a fortune on new players in the close season. Apparently present Sevilla coach Juande Ramos has agreed to become the new manager for next season, although he is coming under heavy pressure to take the reins sooner. In the meantime former striker Clive Allen is expected to temporarily take charge. Former Spurs favourite, Uruguayan international and presently Leeds United assistant manager Gus Poyet has been approached to become Ramos's assistant. Ramos has made quite a name for himself in recent seasons guiding Sevilla to two successive UEFA Cup titles and also being praised for his attacking football. |
