ROME (AFP) - Italian fullback Gianluca Zambrotta, who played at Barcelona for two seasons, has joined AC Milan, the Italian first division club said on Saturday, without giving further contract details.

The 31-year-old Zambrotta therefore returns to the Serie A where he excelled at Bari (1997-1999) and then particularly at Juventus (1999-2006).

He left the Turin club in the summer of 2006 for Barcelona following the match-fixing scandal which had rocked Italian football.

Zambrotta was also crowned a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006 and has played 71 times for his country, scoring two goals. On Monday he will fly with the Italian team to Austria for the June 7 to 29 Euro 2008 finals.

Zambrotta's arrival at AC Milan will compensate for the departure of two fullbacks, Brazilians Cafu and Serginho.

What is Zambrotta doing moving from Barca to a team that is no in the Champions League, and is rebuilding?

gunner_eagle June 1st, 2008 02:05

Barcelona is rebuilding too. And it has been at least three years on the club level without silverware for Zambrotta. On the other hand it seems like Barça can't win anything significant next year. Real is too strong in the La Liga and the Champions League will end after the group stage. So should he stay in Spain for the Kings Cup? He has better chances at Milan to win something more significant (Scudetto, UEFA Cup). And he can be at least in his home country while his team is rebuilding. His side-step to Spain was a flop, so simple. And it's a good decision to leave Barça for Milan.

Now most of the club are rebuilding.

nelson,

don't forget Milan has to maintain their' old folks' home' reputation after Cafu and Serginho left............LOL...........

Zambrotta will be at Milan till he's 38 or when Milan's relegated...........whichever comes first............LOL...............

Giorgio June 1st, 2008 09:16

BesTalentScount - there you go again !!! You have this thing about Milan being a team of old men.

But there is a difference, these are old men who can play soccer, better than any other team in the world.

And I agree with gunner_eagle, this is a good move for Zambrotta.

BesTalentScout June 1st, 2008 13:07

Giorgio,

i must admit i consider players above 30 yrs-old to be old..............

of course it's a good move for Zambrotta, he's got nothing to lose at his age........not so good move for Milan though.

too bad Arsenal is not in the UEFA cup like Milan, i would love to see these 2 teams play each other again................spring chickens vs old goats.........LOL..............

Don't worry m8! The way things are going at Arsenal they'll meet Milan in the UEFA Cup next year. Well that's if Rossoneri aren't in the Intertoto.

Giorgio, good move by Zambrotta. Do you remember me? I'm Fred from USA. I'm coming down to South Africa to see Italy win her 5th WC. See you then!

Tontodonati June 1st, 2008 16:24

Ajax72, are you still smarting about Italy winning the last WC?

Giorgio June 1st, 2008 16:53

Tontodonati - hey Fred, what a wonderful surprise to hear from you again. I've been waiting for you and I was wondering when you'd start posting your messages on this site again.

And where is The Caper ? I hope we get to hear from him soon.

Gunner Eagle, by looking at your profile and considering your logic, I believe you're not even close to being 1 year old. You must be 3 or 4 months old and, believe me, that's a compliment!
