It may have been business as usual at the French summit as Olympique Lyonnais won at Valenciennes FC on Sunday, but it was victories for struggling FC Sochaux-Montbéliard and Toulouse FC which really added spice to the Ligue 1 table.
FC Girondins de Bordeaux came from behind to defeat third-placed AS Nancy Lorraine 2-1 on Saturday and clip Lyon's lead to six points, although the champions restored their nine-point advantage thanks to goals from Kader Keita (8) and Sidney Govou (65) either side of Eric Chelle's 28th-minute equaliser at Stade Nungesser.
Olympique de Marseille moved to within three points of Nancy with a 2-1 victory at FC Lorient in Sunday's late game. Rafik Saïfi gave the hosts the lead just before the break but second-half strikes from Kanga Akalé and Mamadou Niang completed Marseille's comeback.
Despite drawing 1-1 at home against SM Caen, Le Mans UC 72 climb to fifth as OGC Nice lost 1-0 at Sochaux - former Nice player Romain Pitau scoring the only goal in the 80th minute. Sochaux are now four points clear of Toulouse FC, who occupy the final relegation spot, although Les Pitchounes boosted their hopes of avoiding the drop by defeating FC Metz, who are doomed, 2-0. Achille Emana scored both goals in the final ten minutes.
Paris Saint-Germain FC's joy at winning the League Cup yesterday may be tempered by dropping to 19th today - albeit 15 points clear of Metz - and they will now turn their attentions to the visit of 16th-placed RC Strasbourg on Wednesday.
